David Suzuki Visits
The cool night of the 11th of June was heated up by the passionate talk of Canada’s famous scientist, Dr. David Suzuki, at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School.
This fundraising event was organized to help out with the animal protection group Niagara Action for Animals (NAfA), who are being sued by Marineland of Canada for economic loss. The reason for the lawsuit action by Marineland is explained by the Public Education Director for NAfA Daniel Wilson.
It was in response to a letter written by NAfA to a Niagara Falls auto dealership which was planning to hold their staff Christmas party at the marine park” said Wilson. “NAfA offered to meet with the dealership to voice concerns about the conditions and treatment of the animals at Marineland, and the risks to public safety.”
Dr. Suzuki came in support of NAfA in their upcoming lawsuit. The audience was quite literally buzzing before the night started. The event was completely sold out, with over 600 people all waiting to hear the wisdom of Dr. David Suzuki.
“Look at his standing ovation before even speaking,” said Wilson. “It really shows the respect that this community has for Dr. Suzuki.”
His presence is so humbling yet he can be very powerful and passionate when he speaks. His opening anecdote was about how his daughter even at a young age knew that it was wrong to keep animals encaged such as the whale, and how people have taken away freedom from these beautiful animals. When speaking about how Marineland issued this lawsuit in response to the delivery of information by NAfA, Dr. Suzuki stated “There are thugs in our community, suppressing this information. You do not want thugs in your neighbourhood. You want to support freedom.”
Basic freedoms are given to all living things, as well as freedom of information, and speech.
Dr. Suzuki stated that he is very opposed to such organizations that keep animals in this manner, and supported the efforts of NAfA and other animal protection organizations such as Zoo Check.”
